Herbert West—Reanimator originally appeared in Home Brew, a magazine published by George Julian Houtain in a serialized format requiring Lovecraft to write in a sensationalist fashion. Lovecraft was not fond of the story or the cliffhangers required for serialization. Nevertheless, the story is the first mention of Miskatonic University, and features one of the earliest depictions of undead, zombies as the result of scientific experimentation. Lovecraft’s inspiration for Herbert West was Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and makes frequent allusion to her work. The story is also the basis for the movie Re-Animator (1985), and its sequels.
